Nintendo has successfully managed to keep a significant portion of the map for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom concealed from the public prior to its release.
The portion under discussion is the Depths, a significantly large area of Tears’ Hyrule maps that remained entirely inaccessible in Breath of the Wild. In his review that awards a perfect score, Tom Marks encapsulates it most accurately:
You can be confident that the sky islands, while typically small, don’t encompass the entire new area available for exploration. Hidden beneath them lies a treacherous and vast map that’s as big as the entire land of Hyrule itself, and it’s completely shrouded in darkness. This region is massive in scope, and even after spending more than 100 hours playing Tears, I’ve only managed to uncover about half of its wonders.
Marks points out that the Depths, located beneath the red chasms on the surface, offer fewer quests compared to the map above ground. Nevertheless, there are numerous treasures to discover, including an abundance of treasure chests. However, you must be cautious of the Gloom, a substance that reduces your maximum health until you return to the surface or consume a Gloom-removing meal. Despite this, there is still much to explore in the Depths.
How did Nintendo manage to include the Depths area so early on in the game, given that it becomes accessible shortly after the introductory section? Journalists who got a preview of Tears of the Kingdom, including those at IGN, had the opportunity to play the game for several hours. However, the demo they played excluded the Depths, which were kept largely under wraps in the sky.
Furthermore, Nintendo deliberately held back in their marketing strategy to prevent revealing too much. Even though their trailers and gameplay footage showcased glimpses of underground content, they were careful not to spoil the extent of the profound and enjoyable Depth that players would experience.
To clarify, there have been leaks about Tears of the Kingdom that revealed the existence of the Depths. However, even the leaked information does not fully convey the enormous size of this area. To put it simply, it is massive.
