Krafton confirms BGMI to return to India soon after 10-month ban.

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) is set to make a comeback in India. After being banned in July 2020 over privacy and security concerns, the Indian government has now given the green light to Korean publisher Krafton to resume operations of the battle-royale game. The removal of BGMI from the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store under Section 69 of the IT Act had a significant impact on the mobile esports scene in the country. However, the lifting of the ban marks a positive development for the Indian gaming community and the resurgence of digital sports in the region.

In a press release, Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO, Krafton India expressed gratitude towards Indian authorities for allowing the company to reinstate BGMI operations and thanked Indian gamers for their support in the past few months. Sohn also highlighted the notable achievement of BGMI – surpassing 100 million users within a year of its launch in July 2021. BGMI will be the first app to return to India, following hundreds of bans imposed by the government on apps within the past few years.

Following the ban of PUBG Mobile, an exclusive India version of the game, BGMI, entered the scene and revitalized the esports scene in the country. The game hosted various official and unofficial events, including a broadcast on mainstream television called the ‘Masters Series,’ which was telecast live on Star Sports 2 last year, with Global Esports lifting the trophy. Krafton India’s Head Government Affairs, Vibhor Kukreti, stated in a prepared statement that Krafton is a responsible South Korean organization that abides by the law and has put in place several measures to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.

However, according to a report by News18, BGMI will return for a trial period of three months only, as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will continue to monitor its activity to ensure it doesn’t violate any rules set by the Indian government. The game will be making a return with several adjustments, including a set time limit to restrict the number of hours one could play and changes to gore effects. Previously, players could change blood color to blue or green via in-game settings, but the change is expected to be permanent or default.

In March 2021, MeitY removed Dead by Daylight Mobile, the co-op survival horror game from Behaviour Interactive, from Indian mobile storefronts. Though no explicit reason was given, one could assume it relates to the game’s publisher NetEase, which is a Chinese firm responsible for distributing the title within Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea. The Indian government has previously banned several Chinese apps over security concerns.

BGMI’s official release date is yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to be available shortly on Android and iOS as before. Gamers are urged to prioritize their wellbeing and follow responsible gaming practices while playing BGMI and other games.
