Horizon Forbidden West sells 8.4M copies on PS4 and PS5

As of April 16, Horizon Forbidden West has sold 8.4 million copies, according to a post on the PlayStation blog by Jan-Bart van Beek, the studio director of Guerrilla Games, who celebrated the 20th anniversary of the game developer. Van Beek confirmed that the Horizon franchise has sold a total of 32.7 million units, including millions more that have been discovered through PlayStation’s subscription services such as PlayStation Plus and Play at Home initiatives. However, Horizon Forbidden West still has a long way to go to surpass the sales numbers of Horizon Zero Dawn, which sold 20 million copies across PS4 and PC.

Van Beek expressed his gratitude to the community for their continued love and support for the franchise. He said that the Guerrilla team is lucky to witness that support every day, and they share community fan art and cosplay. He promised that the adventures of protagonist Aloy will continue in a sequel, with the cliffhanger ending of Forbidden West setting up plot points for the same.

Horizon Forbidden West recently received a paid expansion, Burning Shores, which turned Los Angeles into a lava-spitting archipelago. Although not explicitly mentioned, the aforementioned 32.7 million sales figure should include both mainline game launches on PS4 and PS5, The Frozen Wilds DLC for the first game, the Burning Shores DLC, Horizon: Call of the Mountain on PS VR2, and the PC release of Horizon Zero Dawn.

The Horizon universe is expanding even further with the announcement of a Netflix series, which will be directed by Steve Blackman, who is best known for his work on The Umbrella Academy. The plot of the series appears to be heavily influenced by the origin story of huntress Aloy, as it will chronicle her journey from being an outcast in her tribe to becoming a hero who saves humanity from a catastrophic threat in a dystopian future. Michelle Lovretta, who is known for her work on Killjoys, will be partnering with Blackman on the script. This is just one of many screen adaptations that PlayStation has in the works, including a God of War series for Amazon Prime Video.

Back in October, there were reports that Horizon Zero Dawn was getting remastered for the PS5, with promises of improved lighting, overhauled textures, and better animations. Sony has a history of releasing remakes and remasters of their popular first-party games, including The Last of Us Part I, which was recently released on PS5 and later ported to PC, despite already having a remastered version for the PS4. Despite being six years old, Horizon Zero Dawn still looks great, and it’s possible that it will receive native 4K support on the PS5 for a reasonable $10 (about Rs. 820) upgrade. However, given Sony’s track record of milking The Last of Us, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Horizon Zero Dawn re-released at an overpriced $70 (about Rs. 5,743) price point on the PS5.

Horizon Forbidden West is available on the PS4 and PS5.
