Introduction

The first release is a boss battle between Liquid Flame and its challenger. Director Hiroshi Takai talks of the location for the battle, which takes place mid-game at Drake’s Breath’s inner sanctum.

The Background of Liquid Flame

For fans of the Final Fantasy franchise, Liquid Flame will sound familiar as one of the famous bosses of Final Fantasy V. This was also the first game that creator Hiroshi Takai worked on for the series. However, Creative Director Kazutoyo Maehiro thought up the idea of including this character into Final Fantasy XVI, being a dedicated fan of the series since childhood.

The Liquid Flame Fanatics

Producer Naoki Yoshida explains that Takai worked on the development of Final Fantasy V, and so, it’s a title he feels passionate about. Maehiro, on the other hand, is a real nerd and Final Fantasy and gaming enthusiast who’s crazy about detail. Yoshida says that Final Fantasy history nods in the game come from both creators.

The Purpose of Liquid Flame

Although it may look like an exciting tribute, according to Maehiro, the inclusion of Liquid Flame has a solid purpose for the game’s storyline. With the player’s involvement, there could exist an opportunity for the player to figure out why the character appears by playing more carefully.

The Characteristics of Liquid Flame in Final Fantasy XVI

According to the combat director Ryota Suzuki, Final Fantasy XVI bosses come in multiple phases. While playing against Liquid Flame, it will transform into different shapes during the battle, like changing from a four-legged beast form to a flying enemy.

Eikon Abilities

Final Fantasy XVI’s central combat comes with Eikon abilities which allow Clive to use special attacks. As the player proceeds, Clive will learn new Eikon abilities. During battles, the player can equip Clive with multiple abilities, and they can change as necessary. Even if the player loses, they can change their build directly from the game-over screen to equip Eikon abilities that match the enemy better.

The Difficulty Setting

The Final Fantasy XVI team made sure that battles never become too difficult that the player would feel tempted to stop playing. The game has two modes – Story-focused and Action-focused, which you can choose from on your first playthrough. With each loss to a boss, the player can proceed to the next phase of the fight, making it more manageable on their next attempt. On the second playthrough, a more challenging Final Fantasy Mode unlocks, allowing players to take Clive with all of his unlocked abilities and enjoy the game to the fullest.

Conclusion

Final Fantasy XVI promises engaging combat through its Eikon abilities and a storyline that takes players through multiple boss battle phases. The creators aim not to make battles too difficult to spoil the storyline. Instead, they want to inspire players to continue and witness Clive’s journey through to the game’s completion.
