The Rise and Fall of Titanfall 3: A Designer’s Recounting

In April 2023, we talked about the potential for Titanfall 3. However, only a few months later, it is time to talk about its demise. Mohammad Alavi, a veteran designer who recently left Respawn after spending over a decade there, shared in an interview with The Burnettwork (via Insider Gaming) that Titanfall 3 was actually months into development before being shelved. Alavi recounted his experiences working on the unreleased game and shared the reasons behind its cancellation.

Titanfall 3’s Progress

Titanfall 3 came out, did what it did, and we were like, ‘Okay, we’re gonna make Titanfall 3,’ and we worked on Titanfall 3 for about 10 months, right? In earnest, right? I mean, we had new tech for it, we had multiple missions going, we had a first playable, which was like, on par to be just as good if not better than whatever we had before, right? But I’ll make this clear: incrementally better, it wasn’t revolutionary.

Alavi revealed that Titanfall 3 was developed for 10 months, with new technologies incorporated, multiple missions being tested, and a first playable being developed that was on par with the previous games. However, he also stressed that the improvements made to the game were merely incremental, and not revolutionary, which might have affected the game’s reception. The multiplayer team struggled to balance the game, with the game’s sensations cranked up to 11, causing players to burn out a bit fast.

The Influence of PUBG

At the time, I had just literally become narrative lead designer on Titanfall 3, I had just pitched the mission, the story, the whole game, that me and Manny [Hagopian] had come up with, made this big presentation and then we went off break, and then we came back from break, and we were like, ‘Yeah, we need to pivot. And we need to go make this game.’ Because we literally canceled Titanfall 3 ourselves because we were like, ‘We can make this game, and it’s going to be Titanfall 2 plus a little bit better, or we can make this thing, which is clearly amazing.’

According to Alavi, what ultimately killed Titanfall 3 was the influence of PUBG. Respawn saw the massive success of Battle Royale modes and started to port Titanfall’s mechanics to a Battle Royale map. As a result, what was originally planned for Titanfall 3 started to sound better for a standalone game. Alavi recalled that the team made the right call by going in this direction and created Apex Legends.

Conclusion

The cancellation of Titanfall 3 was devastating news for fans of the highly acclaimed franchise. However, understanding the factors behind its demise can help us appreciate the thought processes behind game development decisions. As a result, we have Apex Legends, a successful Battle Royale game that continues to evolve and provide players with exciting gameplay. Although Titanfall 3 may never see the light of day, fans of the franchise can still find solace in the fact that the legacy of Titanfall lives on through Respawn’s modern titles.
