Born During COVID: The Rise of Blaseball

Blaseball was a fantasy baseball simulator developed during the COVID-19 pandemic by The Game Band. It was a unique and bizarre text-only game that depicted baseball in a world of otherworldly horrors.

The Demise of Blaseball

Unfortunately, The Game Band has recently announced that they will be shutting down Blaseball and laying off the development team. They have promised to provide the team with severance pay, healthcare extensions, and a dedicated staff member to assist them with job searches.

The Wonders of Procedural Storytelling in Blaseball

Blaseball was an astounding example of procedural storytelling. It allowed players to bet on games and earn points, with chance encounters similar to Dungeons & Dragons, that could rend games and reality itself, asunder. At the end of each week, the community could spend their points to vote on new rules for the game, with anything being possible.

The Discipline Era

The Discipline Era showcased a range of supernatural events. These include a hellmouth opening that devoured the Moab desert, three eldritch gods appearing in the form of a giant peanut, a huge floating microphone – possibly a player’s ghost – and a massive squid that attempted to eat someone. Towards the end of the Discipline Era, a powerful grand slam blasted the spacetime continuum apart, splitting Los Angeles into infinite versions of itself.

Players who failed to respect the Great Shelled One’s idols were entombed in giant peanut shells, which led to a supernatural financial kerfuffle. Furthermore, there was an event of crow weather that no one predicted or understood.

A Player’s Perspective in Blaseball

An interesting summary of the season from a player’s perspective can be found Samuel Fung’s article on The Verge. It is an intriguing read that provides incredible insights into the game.

The End of an Era

The Game Band has cited the unsustainability of running Blaseball, which put a strain on the development team and made it difficult to keep the game true to itself. After numerous failed attempts to rectify this, the team concluded that they could not win this fight in the long run.

The Legacy of Blaseball

Despite its discontinuation, Blaseball managed to create an incredibly devoted online fandom. The community even established a merch store full of fan-created apparel, Blaseball cards, mugs, and more, with all profits given to charity.
